Cohen's First Taste

Tuesday, April 14, 2015

I am so excited that Cohen is starting solids! One goal that I have for Cohen and my future children is to teach them healthy eating habits. A good way to start is by making my own baby food to give to Cohen. This week we started Cohen on avocado.

I took maybe 1/8 of an avocado and mashed it up real good. Then I added breast milk in until I got the consistency of yogurt. Darin was disgusted by the thought of the combination, but I reassured him that it would help Cohen because he would recognize the familiar taste of his milk.

The first day Cohen seemed like he didn't like it so much. He didn't understand the concept of the spoon feeding and it took him a while to get used to another flavor. Towards the end of the feeding though he was getting the hang of it! Day two was even better! He seemed to be loving it. This time I ate avocado with him (minus the breast milk lol) to show him mommy eats it too. He even grabbed the spoon and tried feeding himself. He ate the entire bowl that I made for him. Of course a majority of it ended up on him rather than in his mouth but that's cuter anyways. Oh and this time I didn't make the mistake of feeding him with clothes on.

If you're still reading this let me share a secret with you. I'm really truly embarrassed to post those first few pictures where I'm in them with Cohen. I have been losing hair like crazy since giving birth and you can really tell in these pictures because my hair is up and also the angle that the photo was taken. However, even though I don't have the "ideal" hair line anymore, I wouldn't trade anything for that little avocado mess of a boy that I have to snuggle with. I just love him so much and my imperfections just serve as a reminder to me that God blessed me with a healthy beautiful baby boy. Happy six months baby Cohen. I love you my Cocoa Puffs. I hope you have enjoyed these first six months as much as mommy and daddy have.

Fine Day for a Farmers Market

Top//Jeans (similar)//Shoes

There's a cute little city near us that holds a weekly farmers markets on Saturday mornings. I've been two weeks in a row now and I'm going to make an effort to try and go as often as I can. It is so fun to support local farmers and I have so much fun shopping there vs. the grocery store. Grocery shopping is my absolute least favorite chore. I've always joked about hiring a personal shopper to do it for us.

At the market I bought butternut squash, sweet potatoes, asparagus, strawberries, onions, grass fed beef, and sourdough bread. I've never actually tried cooking butternut squash or sweet potatoes but I like them both so figured I would try and make some baby food out of them. As a heads up to anyone going to a farmers market... BRING CASH! I went the first time without any cash on me so I only bought from vendors that took plastic which seemed to not be very many haha. I just assumed that nowadays everyone takes plastic but I was clearly wrong on that one. Also I feel a little embarrassed to say this but there was this lady I got talking to and she was so nice and helpful that I felt like I should buy something from her. She was selling tomato plants and I figured what the heck... If I can grow a person why not try growing a tomato. Let's just say that that tomato is no longer... I immediately forgot about it when I came home and a week later had to throw it out :( One of these days I will learn about gardening but not anytime soon I guess.

Anyways I had such a fun time shopping around that I will definitely head back! Are there any farmers markets near you? Also have you ever tried growing anything yourself, because tips would be appreciated :)

Love y'all!

The Last of New York

Thursday, April 2, 2015

After a day of much needed rest we ventured out to NYC on our own for the first time. Our friends that we were staying with had to return to work/school after the weekend. We started our day at the 9/11 Memorial which we got lost going to like 3 times. Even with Google Maps.

Darin really wanted to check out the financial district that day so we saw the New York Stock Exchange on Wall Street and saw the famous Charging Bull statue which I had never heard of. The whole week Darin kept talking about seeing the Bull and I kept thinking he was saying Bowl. So I thought we were headed to take a picture with a giant bowl haha. In the evening we checked out Battery Park and then did the city night bus tour. We had an awesome tour guide who thought Cohen was awesome so that made things real fun! The bus took us over the Brooklyn bridge into Brooklyn for a bit which was our first and only visit into one of the other boroughs.

On our last day in the actual city we ate Lunch at a place called Jacob's Pickles. So yummy. I got this never ending skillet of Mushroom Mac N Cheese which I probably only finished a fourth of. The rest I gave to a homeless man in Times Square. We spent the majority of our time that day at the MET museum. I enjoyed the art and Darin mainly enjoyed playing with Cohen but he did appreciate some of the art. If I go back to New York there are two things I will do differently. First, I will make time to see a Broadway Musical. I wasn't quite sure if babies were allowed to go and I didn't think Cohen could sit quiet for 3 hours. Second, I will dedicate multiple days to just exploring the various museums in the city. The museums were definitely my favorite part. I'm not sure if it's because I was just excited to be out of the cold or if it's the inner nerd insidenthat loves to read about everything.

Well New York, we had such a blast! Hopefully Cohen will appreciate all of the pictures in the future when he wants to hear all about the fun we had in New York.

Love y'all!
